This past Saturday (4/10/10), Jon and I headed to Mt Frissell. Hey, about time we high pointed our own state. Took us longer to get there then we figured...over 2 hours!! We got to Mt Washington road (heeehee) at 12pm and saw a group (with 2 dogs) getting ready to hike part of the AT. We followed the Red Trail.
Round Mountain was a fun lil hike. We could see a group of people chillin' on Frissell, cheerin (jeerin?) us on. We made the summit of Frissell from the road in 50 mins, not too bad. We saw the cool tin box where the trail journals were, then decided to take a rest on the outlook where we saw the group (they were Scouts, and pretty cool)
We went onward, and climbed *down* to CT's high point....just a little state line marker. Kept goin, until we reached the Tri-State marker.....NY, MASS, and the year were carved in, but I guess they do not like CT, because it wasn't carved in....someone scratched it in.
Switched from red to white trail, and summited Brace Mountain.....saw out scout friends again. Nice wide open summit....big rock pile with a flagpole. One of the Scouts took out pic, and we were on our way back.
Good hike, 3 hours total, not really worth the long drive, but I am happy to have finally highpointed my home state.
On the ride home, we popped up Haystack mountain. Not much to say, easy walk up, very cool tower at the top.
Good hikes!
